Museums in Cuzco

In Cusco city there are a lot of museums to visit and some are better than others, there are many public and private museums, with great works of art, archaeological and historic ambits. Cusco's best museums house the richest collections of ancient Peru to expressions of modern art. To admiring pre-Columbian masterpieces, gold, textiles, pottery and more.

You could say that the city of Cusco is a living museum, just visit the colonial churches or houses, or stroll through the artistic barrio (neighborhood of San Blas) and their artisans workshops, is back in time and live off their art and folklore ...

Pre-Columbian Art Museum

The mansion was "Kancha Inca" in 1450; in 1580 it was the home of conquistador Alonso Díaz; and in 1850, that of Count Cabrera. It was completely restored, and reopened as the Museum of pre-Columbian Art in June 2003. The museum's 11 rooms are home to some 450 works dating from 1250 B.C. to 1532 A.D. They were selected from a repository of some 45,000 pieces in the care of the Museo Larco of Lima. Visiting hours: Mon - Sun and public holidays 9.00 am - 10.00 pm., location: Plazoleta Nazarenas N° 231.

Museo de Casa Concha

Located in Santa Catalina Ancha N° 320. The exhibition of over 360 archaeological pieces from Machu Picchu Inca City that were recently returned by the U.S. Yale University will be held at the newly-renovated Casa Concha. Visitors will be able to appreciate ceramics, stone and metal objects, fragments of bones as well as a nearly complete skeleton of a male between 23 and 25 years. Currently there are 11 exhibition rooms, each of which has been carefully created to offer an interesting insight into aspects of Machu Picchu life and history.

Museo Histórico Regional (Regional Historical Museum)

Located in Calle Heladeros. Founded in 1984, occupies the House of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, exhibition of pictorial works of the Escuela Cusqueña, collection of pre-ceramic period, ceramic period and Inca culture, weavings and pre-Hispanic jewels, also colonial furniture. The Inca Garcilaso (1539-1616) was son of the Spanish conqueror Sebastián Garcilaso de la Vega and a royal Inca princess, the Palla Isabel Chimpu Ocllo and lived his childhood in this house, reliquary of the colonial art, beautifully restored and declared National Monument. Visiting hours: Mon - Sun 8.00 am - 7.00 pm

Museo de Arte Religioso (Museum of Religious Art)

Located in Calle Hatun Rumiyoc s/n) - Exhibition of religious art works of the colonial time and paintings; located in the Palacio Arzobispal, beautiful colonial mansion, in which highlights its front and balconies. Built on the real palace of the Inca Sinchi Roca. In one of its megalithic walls, in the lateral part, on the street Hatunrumiyoc, is located the famous 12-sided stone, cut and carved stone block that has 12 vertexes and it is assembled in perfect form, not being able to enter a knife leaf among its junctures. Entrance fee. Visiting hours: Mon. – Sat. 8:00 A.M. – 11:30 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. – 5:30 P.M.

Museo de Sitio del Koricancha (Archaeological Museum of the Koricancha)

Located in Plaza Intipampa, corner of Avenida El Sol and Calle Santo Domingo. Visiting hours: Mon. – Sat. 8:30 A.M. – 6:30 P.M. and Sun. 2:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. Exhibition of the collection of archaeological Inca and pre-Inca pieces found in the excavations carried out in the "Templo de Koricancha" (Temple of Koricancha)

Santa Catalina Museum

Located in Calle Santa Catalina Angosta. Visiting hours: Mon. – Sat. 9:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M. and Fri. 9:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. Here they exhibit paintings of the Escuela Cusqueña with religious themes, textiles, woodcarvings, and Colonial altarpieces. The best among them are Diego Quispe Tito's paintings, the Arcade carpet, and religious ornaments made of gold and silver threads.

Museo Inka - Museo Arqueológico de la Universidad Nacional San Antonio Abad

Located on Cuesta del Almirante street Nº 153. Exhibition of archaeological pieces of the Inca culture, and objects and furniture of the colonial time, important archaeological collection that includes mummies, pottery, textiles, and gold and silverware. Located in the "Casa del Almirante" (House of the Admiral) construction of the XVII century that belonged to Admiral Francisco Aldrete Maldonado, old colonial house with stone facade that shows the coat-of-arms, with precious covered decorations. Visiting hours: Mon. – Fri. 8:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. Sat. and holidays 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.
